Termite-safe furniture is not about one product. It is a set of material choices — the board, the back panel, the edges, the base — that together leave termites no way in. This guide covers each one.
1. The core board
This is the biggest decision. High density fibreboards resist termites through their structure.
- BOILO (above 1000 kg/m3) for wet and high-risk areas
- HDHMR (above 850 kg/m3) for general furniture
- Branded BWP plywood where plywood is preferred
Compare them all in our board comparison.
2. The back panel
The back panel touches the wall, which is where termites arrive from. Thin hardboard or cheap ply here undoes everything else. Use 6mm to 9mm HDHMR.
3. Edge banding
An exposed edge is the weakest part of any board. PVC edge band on all four edges — including hidden ones — seals the core against moisture and insects.
4. Surface finish
Laminate, acrylic or pre-laminated surfaces add a hard non-wood skin. Laminate the inner faces too, not just the visible side, so the panel is sealed and stays balanced.
5. Base and legs
Never let board rest directly on the floor. Use PVC, steel or aluminium legs with a clip-on skirting. This keeps the carcass clear of mopping water and breaks the path from the floor.
6. Non-wood options
For some locations, materials with no wood content are worth considering: aluminium or steel frames for utility areas, stone or tile for the plinth under a wardrobe, and WPC or PVC boards in constantly wet spots. They do not feed termites, though they differ in feel, finish and screw holding.
Putting it together
A good specification for Warangal homes: HDHMR carcass and back panel, BOILO in wet zones, edge band on every edge, laminate on both faces, and legs under every floor unit.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best anti termite material for furniture?

Is steel furniture the only termite-proof option?
Steel has no termite risk, but modern high density boards give termite resistance with the look and flexibility of wood.
