Walk into any board shop and you will hear five names: BOILO, HDHMR, MDF, plywood and particle board. All can make furniture. They behave very differently when termites and moisture arrive.

BOILO
The densest board, with boiling water proof and fire retardant properties. Best in wet and high-risk areas. Heavy and premium priced. More in BOILO density explained.
HDHMR
The all-rounder. Uniform high density, termite and borer resistant, good screw holding. Suitable for almost all home furniture.
Plywood
Strong and familiar. Termite performance depends on the brand's treatment and core quality, so it is only as reliable as the sheet you actually receive.
MDF
Smooth and excellent for routed designs, painted shutters and wall panelling. Keep it to dry rooms and away from floors.
Particle board
The lowest cost option, widely used in ready-made furniture. Once an edge gets wet it swells and softens, and softened board is easy for termites. Suitable only for dry, short-life or budget use.
How to decide
- Is the location wet or on a ground-floor outer wall? Choose BOILO.
- Is it general home furniture? Choose HDHMR.
- Is it decorative and dry? MDF is fine.
- Is budget the only concern and the room is dry? Particle board, with sealed edges.
